One Dance Floor for Both Families
By DJ Nate Burgoyne
Every wedding brings two families together, and sometimes those families are still getting to know each other. They might come from different cultures, love different music, or carry a little history into the room. Family tension at a wedding is more common than people think, and if you’re expecting a little at yours, I have good news. Your reception is one of the best chances you’ll ever get to bring everyone together, and music is how I make it happen.
I’m not a family therapist, and I’m not going to pretend a DJ can fix everything. What I can do is give both sides of your family a reason to get up and share the same dance floor. I’ve seen it work, and it’s one of my favorite parts of the job.
A wedding that stuck with me
Every wedding I play raises the bar for me, but one night in particular shows exactly what music can do.
The mother of the groom didn’t like the bride, and everyone could feel it. On top of that, the two families came from different cultures. That’s a lot of tension to walk into on a day that’s supposed to be about celebrating.
I didn’t make a speech about everyone getting along, and I didn’t say a word about it on the mic. I just played music that could appeal to both sides of the room. Little by little, people started moving, and by the end of the night they were on the dance floor together.
That’s the part I love. Nobody had to talk it out or make a big gesture. The music gave them something to share, and they took it.
Music that feels like home to everyone
When two families don’t share the same soundtrack, it’s tempting to pick one side’s favorite music and hope the other side warms up to it. I’d much rather play to both.
My goal is to build a night where each side of your family hears something that feels familiar, so nobody spends the reception feeling like a guest at someone else’s party. When one side hears a song they love, they get up. When the next song speaks to the other side, they join in. Before long, everyone is out there together, and that shared floor becomes the moment people talk about afterward.
This works for destination weddings and local weddings alike. Whether your families are meeting for the first time or have known each other for years, the dance floor is a place where everyone can show up as themselves and still be part of the same celebration.
If family tension flares up, I let the music do the work
Even on a great night, a tense moment can pop up. Someone makes a comment, a look gets exchanged, and the room feels it. When that happens, I have a simple approach.
I don’t interject, and I don’t comment on it. Your family business stays your family business, and the mic is never the place to address it. Talking about a tense moment in front of a full room only makes it bigger.
Instead, I use the music. First, I drop the energy so the room can take a breath. Then I shift the vibe so the night feels different for a minute. That gives people space to recover on their own, without an audience. Once the room is ready, I bring everyone back and build the party up again.
Most guests never even notice what happened. They just remember that the night kept feeling good. That’s exactly how I want it.
Why a little tension doesn’t have to define the night
You invited the people you love, even the complicated ones. A night that brings both families together is a gift to you and to them, and it often starts with a single song that gets the right people up at the right time.
When you work with me, you don’t have to worry about managing your relatives during the reception. You get to enjoy your wedding while I keep an eye on the room and use the music to keep everyone connected. If your families come from different cultures or have a little history, that doesn’t make your wedding difficult. It makes it real, and I’m stoked to help you celebrate it.

Can a DJ help with family tension at a wedding?
Music can’t fix a family, but it can give everyone a reason to share the dance floor. I play music that appeals to both sides of the room, and I’ve watched families with real tension end up dancing together.
How does a wedding DJ play music for families from different cultures?
That’s a great opportunity. I aim to play music that feels familiar to both sides so everyone feels like the party is theirs too.
What does a DJ do if a tense moment happens at the reception?
I don’t interject or comment on it. I drop the energy, shift the vibe, let people recover, and then bring everyone back to the dance floor when the room is ready.
Will the DJ address family drama on the microphone?
No. Family business stays private. I use the music to calm the room instead of talking about it in front of everyone.
Does this work for destination weddings in Hawaii and local weddings?
Yes. Whether your families are meeting for the first time or have known each other for years, the dance floor is a place where everyone can celebrate together.
