Get Your Songs Without Losing the Dance Floor
By Nate Burgoyne
A lot of couples ask me the same question on our first call. Do you bring club energy, or do you take requests? They figure it has to be one or the other. Either the DJ runs the night like a nightclub and ignores what anyone wants, or the DJ plays whatever guests ask for and the party wanders all over the place.
Here’s the good news: you get both. You can hear every song on your must-play list and still have a dance floor that stays packed all night. The secret is doing most of the music planning before the wedding, then handling guest requests on the day in a way that keeps the energy up. Let me walk you through exactly how we do it at Frobaby.
It all starts before the wedding
Once you book with us, you get access to our song planning app. This is where you tell me about your music, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite parts of the whole process, because it’s where I really get to know your taste.
The app is for planning ahead, not for the wedding day itself. You and your partner can open it whenever you have a few spare minutes, add songs, change your mind, and come back later with more ideas. You don’t have to get it perfect on the first try. Starting early simply gives you more time to have fun with it.
Inside the app, you’ll build two lists that shape your whole night: your must-plays and your do-not-plays. Together, they tell me what your wedding should sound like.
Your must-play list
Your must-play list is exactly what it sounds like. These are the songs you want to hear at your wedding, no matter what. Maybe it’s the song from your first road trip together, the one your college friends always scream along to, or a track that gets you dancing the second it comes on.
Here’s my promise: if it’s on your must-play list, it gets played. You can relax knowing your favorite song will make it into the night, with no need to wander over to the booth halfway through the reception to check on it. It’s handled.
My job is to work those songs into the party so they feel like a natural part of the night instead of a checklist. That way, when your song comes on, it feels like a moment, and your friends are right there on the floor with you.
Your do-not-play list
The other list is just as important, and it might be the most valuable thing you do in the app. Your do-not-play list is where you tell me which songs you’d rather not hear at your wedding. Any song on that list stays off the speakers all night, even if a guest asks for it.
The more specific you are, the better this list works. Writing “nothing cheesy” gives me a general idea, but actual song titles give me a clear answer. If there’s a song that reminds you of an ex, a song you’ve heard at every wedding you’ve been to this year, or one that would make your grandma blush, put it on the list.
I think of the do-not-play list as protection for your vibe. Once I know which songs aren’t part of your night, I can put all my energy into the music that is.
You choose how closely I follow your list
There’s one more setting in the app that makes a big difference. You get to choose how closely I stick to your song lists once the party starts, and there are four options.
If you choose loosely, your lists act as guideposts, and I have plenty of room to read the dance floor and follow the crowd. Moderately means I honor your lists while still riding the energy in the room. Tightly means I stay close to your picks even when the room starts to shift. And the last option means I play only the songs you requested ahead of time.
There’s no wrong answer, and you know your crowd better than anyone. I’ll share one thing I’ve noticed over the years, though. When couples choose to keep me tightly on their list, even if nobody is dancing, almost all of them end up asking me to loosen up partway through the wedding. In my experience, it’s happened every time but once. Once the party is going and people are having a blast, most couples are happy to let the dance floor lead.
So my advice is to pick the setting you’ll still feel good about when the party is in full swing. Whichever one you choose, your must-plays still get played and your do-not-plays still stay off the speakers.
I review everything at least a week out
At least a week before your wedding, I go through everything you’ve put in the app. That gives me time to get familiar with your must-plays, make sure your do-not-plays are locked in, and start picturing how your night is going to flow.
By the time I walk in on your wedding day, your music isn’t a mystery to me. I already know what you love, what you’d rather skip, and how much room you want me to have. That’s what lets me focus on your guests and the energy in the room instead of figuring out your taste on the fly.
Guest requests on the wedding day
Even with great planning, your guests are going to want to share their favorite songs, and that’s a good thing. It means they’re having fun. Here’s how we keep requests easy for everyone.
First, I never work the booth alone. I always have an assistant with me, and one of their jobs is to chat with guests who come up with a request. That matters more than you might think. The worst moment to stop a DJ is right in the middle of mixing one song into the next, and guests have no way of knowing when that is. With my assistant greeting people at the booth, I can stay locked in on the music, and the dance floor never feels a bump.
My assistant keeps it friendly and honest. They’ll say something like, “Great song, I’m writing it down. No promises, but we’ll do our best.” Then, if the song makes sense for that moment in the night, I play it.
Some requests get the VIP treatment. When the bride, the groom, or the parents ask for a song, I get it in as soon as I can. You’re the reason we’re all there, so your requests go to the front of the line.
For everyone else, I play the requests that fit the vibe. Your uncle’s song pick might be perfect at the right point in the night, and when it is, I’m happy to make it happen. When a request is close but not quite a match for what’s playing, I can remix it or layer it live so it slides into the flow. That way your guest hears their song, and the floor keeps moving.
Why we keep requests low-key
We let requests come to us naturally instead of advertising them. You won’t see a request jar on the table, slips of paper going around, or me on the mic inviting everyone to come up to the booth. That’s on purpose.
When the song playing right now is a banger, I want your guests out on the floor enjoying it, not standing in line to talk about the next one. Keeping requests low-key is how everyone stays in the moment, and staying in the moment is what makes a dance floor feel like a club.
Through all of it, I’m looking out for three things at once: your vision for the night, the dance floor, and the guests who came to party with you.
So, club energy or requests?
You get both, every time. You plan your must-plays and do-not-plays ahead of time, choose how closely I follow them, and let my team take care of guest requests on the day. I handle the rest, reading the room and keeping your people dancing until the very last song, which matters even more under Oahu’s 10pm wedding music curfew.

Can a wedding DJ bring club energy and still play song requests?
Yes. With Frobaby, you plan your must-play and do-not-play songs before the wedding, and on the day my assistant takes guest requests so I can keep the dance floor moving. You get your songs and a packed floor.
How does the Frobaby song planning app work?
After you book, you use the app before the wedding to add your must-play songs and do-not-play songs and to choose how closely I follow your lists. I review everything at least a week before your wedding.
Will every song on our must-play list get played?
Yes. Every song on your must-play list gets played, and every song on your do-not-play list stays off the speakers all night.
How closely will the DJ follow our song list?
You choose. The app lets you pick loosely, moderately, tightly, or only your pre-requested songs. Almost every couple who chooses to stay tightly on the list even if nobody is dancing asks me to loosen up during the wedding, so pick a setting you will still love once the party is going.
How do you handle guest song requests at the wedding?
My assistant greets guests at the booth so I can stay focused on the music. Requests from the couple and parents go in as soon as possible, and other requests play when they fit the moment. I can also remix or layer a song live so it fits the flow.
Can guests request songs through the app on the wedding day?
The app is for planning before the wedding. On the day, guests can share a request with my assistant at the booth, and we keep it low-key so everyone stays on the dance floor.
